Fashion event: "Der letzte Schrei I" "The latest trend I"
Date: 7th - 9th February 2003
Venue: Cinematte, Bern, Switzerland
Concept
The fashion show was the start of a three-day fashion event at Cinematte, an alternative and popular cinema in Bern. The fashion performance per se took place on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday the audience had the possibility to look at the creations, try them on and purchase them. They could also attend fashion shows, watch a film or have a drink at the bar.
The catwalk on Friday evening had to catch the audience’s interest and awaken curiosity about the clothes. I wanted the public to fancy coming for a second time and provide them with the opportunity to flick through the items whilst asking themselves: ‘Who’s dress was the red one with the flower?’ or ‘was it green?’, or ‘I want to see how it looks on me’…
All the designers made a collection for everyday-life, so I took the idea as the basis for the presentation and located the creations in familiar situations. We projected the image of familiar locations used by many people: A public toilet, an office, a café... The models on the stage were an integral part of that specific place. The background projections followed the course of a ‘typical’ day.
The music
The Music often featured the real sound of the room and was combined with music pieces complementing the specific situation.
The Video
The video projection was very simple: There were no cuts nor animations. We were interested in emphasizing the details. For instance, in the office scene one could only see the photocopying machine churning out piles of paper. At the main station the backdrop was the changing timetable. The toilet scene displayed a urinal…
In three of the scenes we included a filmed person acting in the room:
In the conference hall, the actor was calling out the models, inviting them to present themselves. The scene felt like a meeting, in which the actor danced. In another scene, he was dancing with the models in a club. In the last sequence he was simply taking a bath. In order to keep the audience focused, it was always the same actor.
I present a sequence of photographs as an illustration of the show:
